ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A former Woodstock police officer indicted in the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old driver last October was granted $50,000 bond Monday.

Grant Matthew Shaw of Canton is facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the killing of Emmanuel Millard.

As conditions of his bond, Shaw was ordered to stay away from the victim’s family and was told he cannot possess any weapons.

Around 10:45 p.m. on Oct. 12, officers attempted to pull over Millard’s Hyundai near Highway 92 and Hames Road in Woodstock for a series of traffic offenses, according to the Woodstock Police Department at the time.

Police said Millard tried to get away and led officers on a chase into Cobb County. Woodstock police said during the chase, “the suspect ran off the road in multiple locations, nearly struck multiple civilian vehicles, and attempted to strike police vehicles.”

Officers used a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver to stop Millard’s car, which ended up crashing near Highway 92 and Old Mountain Park Road in Cobb County, according to Woodstock police.

A Woodstock police officer – later identified as Shaw – shot Millard once as officers were attempting to arrest him, Woodstock police said.

Millard was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died of his injuries two days later.

Officials said the incident was captured on Shaw’s body camera.

Police said three law enforcement vehicles were damaged, but no officers were injured.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) conducted an independent investigation into the shooting and Shaw was placed on administrative leave, both of which are standard in cases of shootings involving officers. Shaw later resigned from the department.

The GBI handed over its findings to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office after it completed its investigation.
