Attorney General Ford Calls on Biden Administration to Extend Temporary Protected Status for Immigrants from Countries Facing Dangerous Conditions
Carson City, NV – Today, Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford announced he has joined with 14 other attorneys general to urge the Biden administration to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for all 17 countries currently designated, or at least for the seven countries where the designation is set to expire within six months.
In the letter to the Biden Administration, the attorneys general also urged granting TPS to Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Libya and Mali, citing extremely dangerous conditions in those nations which include widespread human rights violations. According to the U.S. Department of State, these countries are experiencing widespread human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings. Many are also facing armed conflicts that threaten civilian lives and involve atrocities such as conflict-related sexual violence, the use of child soldiers and other severe abuses.
“Many of the immigrants in our country with TPS have found refuge in Nevada, and our commitment to human rights cannot abide seeing these individuals forced back into harm’s way,” said AG Ford. “I applaud the Biden Administration’s swift action in extending TPS for El Salvador, Venezuela, Ukraine and Sudan. I also continue to call for the administration to take further action in the other countries.”
TPS allows undocumented individuals in the United States to remain temporarily due to unsafe conditions in their home countries. The program is a critical humanitarian tool and reflects the United States' history of providing refuge to those fleeing armed conflict, natural disasters and oppressive conditions. After receiving the letter, the Biden administration announced it would extend TPS for four of the seven countries nearing expiration: El Salvador, Venezuela, Ukraine and Sudan.
Attorney General Ford joins the attorneys general of New York, Arizona, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Rhode Island and Vermont in sending the letter.
