National road safety, prevention strategy analysed

Luanda, ANGOLA, August 17 - A draft national strategy for prevention and road safety was discussed Friday at a meeting chaired by the Vice President of Republic, Bornito de Sousa. ,

 

 

The information is expressed in a press release from the First Meeting of National Traffic National Council (CNVOT).

 

The road safety and prevention strategy is a guiding tool of government policies to reduce accidents.

 

The document will be submitted to the head of Executive for approval, according to the note.

 

The participants also evaluated the report on road accidents for 2017 and the first half this year.

 

They concluded that there was a slight decrease in the indicators of the serious accidents.

 

Data released by the National Police general commander, Paulo de Almeida, put at 13,650 the number of accidents occurred in the country last year.

 

As result 2,769 deaths, with 1,189 dead in accidents recorded in the first six months of this year.

 

In Angola road accidents are the 2nd leading cause of death after malaria and the first cause of physical disability.

 

In the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, Angola comes with the highest accident rate per 100,000 inhabitants.

 

The Council recommended integrated actions to do away with the traffic constraints which are the main causes of fatal accidents.

 

The participants were informed on the state of the fundamental network of roads and, particularly, on the Luanda / Benguela / Huíla section.

 

The meeting also analysed a study and development of a monitoring and evaluation framework for the tripartite COMESA- EAC-SADC transport and traffic facilitation plan.

 

The study is part of the project of integration and progressive unification of regional economic communities, in line with the objectives of the African Union
