A Marine killed in a vehicle rollover during training activities at Camp Pendleton in California was identified Friday by the U.S. Marine Corps as 1st Lt. Hugh C. McDowell, 24, a platoon commander from Washington.
Six other Marines were injured but not seriously, officials said. All were part of the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division.
McDowell started his Marine career nearly two years ago, on May 5, 2017, as an officer, said 1st Lt. Cameron Edinburgh, a spokesman for the 1st Marine Division.
Circumstances of the Thursday morning accident involving a light armored vehicle were under investigation, the Marines said.
"This is a tragic event, and our thoughts are with the family, friends and the unit at this difficult time," the 1st Marine Division said.
Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is described by the military as the Marine Corps' largest West Coast expeditionary training facility and one of the Defense Department's busiest installations.
