A World War II mortar found in a Wombourne canal will be detonated by bomb disposal experts.

The rusty, unexploded device was discovered in the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, at Bratch Locks, by a member of the public at 10.23am on Tuesday morning (January 15).

Bomb disposal experts from the Army's Royal Logistics Corps raced to the scene at Bratch Locks and a cordon was put in place along the canal towpath.

The bomb is believed to be a three-inch mortar used in the 1960s and a controlled explosion will take place in the next hour.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “The bomb will be moved to a disused quarry in Wombourne for a safe and controlled explosion.

“Experts have said there is no risk to the public.”
