The exercise began on September 10 off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt and will continue until September 20.

Bright Star is considered one of the major international military exercises in the world. Participating in this year's exercise are the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, Greece, Italy, France and the United Kingdom with land, air, naval and special forces.

The countries of Lebanon, Rwanda, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Chad, Djibuti, Mali, South Africa, Senegal, Canada, Niger and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are present as observers.

The aim of the exercise is the exchange of experience, coordination among joint forces, the deepening of the knowhow in combatting terrorism, administration and medical support planning and the training in joint air military operations and safety at sea.

The specific exercise was the result of a peace agreement signed on March 26, 1979 at Camp David by the Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and the Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in the presence of US president Jimmy Carter.
