Army sets example by building homes for flood victims: Yunus

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus praised the Bangladesh Army today for setting a example in transparency and quality through the construction of homes for flood-affected families in four southeastern districts.
"Bangladesh Army constructed 300 houses for flood victims in difficult condition under a special housing project in flood-hit Feni, Noakhali, Cumilla and Chattogram districts," he said, addressing a house handover ceremony virtually from the Chief Adviser's Office in Dhaka.
Yunus highlighted that the army ensured quality and proper use of resources in the project, which was completed using only half of the Tk 50 crore allocation.
Expressing his gratitude to the army and local administrations for constructing the houses, Prof Yunus hoped that Bangladesh Army would stand by the country's people in any disaster in the future too.
The chief adviser further said it was the government's responsibility to stand by the flood-affected people and that is why it took on the special housing construction project immediately after the flood.
Those who lost houses in the flood have now got their dwelling where they would be able to live with their family members, he added.
Yunus also urged the beneficiaries to ensure education for their children so that they can be good human beings and good entrepreneurs.
A total of 300 houses were distributed among the flood victims in the four districts.
On behalf of the chief adviser, the deputy commissioners of the four districts handed over the keys of houses among them.
A total of 110 houses were distributed among the beneficiaries in Feni, while 90 houses in Noakhali, 70 houses in Cumilla and 30 houses in Chattogram.
Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, and Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman also spoke, among others, at the function at the CAO end.
Senior civil and military officials were present as well.
