The rule was implemented April 14 and aims to address teens who the library said were repeatedly breaking the library's behavior policy.

  • This temporary rule was implemented as a result of disruptive behavior by teens impacting other library patrons and staff.
  • The library aims to create a safer environment for all and support staff with this new policy.
  • The rule is expected to be lifted at the end of the school year.

OSHKOSH – Earlier this week, Oshkosh Public Library instituted a new temporary evening-hours rule for minors.

The rule asks for teens using the library after 6:30 p.m. to either be accompanied by a guardian or to check in at a Greeter Station, sign in to the library, and show their student ID, state-issued ID, driver’s license or library card.

What do you think of the rule? Will it make the library experience better? Do you have thoughts on other ways to improve the library experience? Tell us for a potential future article. Email your thoughts to Brandon Reid at breid@gannett.com. Be sure to include your name and city of residence.

Here’s a little more about why the library said the rule was implemented:

  • Teens were repeatedly breaking the library’s behavior policy and were being disruptive and affecting the library experience for other patrons.
  • The disruptions were also putting a strain on library staff, who “made ongoing efforts to engage teens in a positive and a respectful way,” the library said in a news release.
  • Library Director Darryl Eschete said: “We want the library to remain a space where everyone feels safe. By asking that minors be accompanied by a parent or guardian after 6:30 p.m., we’re promoting a safer space for young people while also supporting library staff and the community.”

The new rule is expected to be lifted at the end of the school year.
