US Strikes Kill 38 in Yemen as Houthis Launch Ballistic Missile at Israel

At least 38 people were killed and 102 wounded in US airstrikes on a Houthi-controlled fuel port in western Yemen on Thursday, marking one of the deadliest days since Washington launched military operations against the Iran-backed group earlier this year. The strike targeted Ras Isa, a key fuel terminal the US says was used to finance and sustain Houthi operations.

The US Central Command confirmed the attack, stating it was aimed at degrading the Houthis’ ability to threaten regional security and international trade. “The objective of these strikes was to degrade the economic source of power of the Houthis, who continue to exploit and bring great pain upon their fellow countrymen,” CENTCOM said on X.

Hours after the US strike, the Houthis launched a ballistic missile at Israel, which was successfully intercepted by Israeli air defenses, according to the IDF. No injuries or damage were reported.

Sirens sounded across central Israel, including in Jerusalem and West Bank settlements, following a civilian alert issued by the IDF Home Front Command using a new early warning system that notified the public several minutes before traditional sirens were triggered.

The missile marked the latest in a series of over 20 ballistic missiles and several drones launched at Israel by the Houthis since March 18, when the IDF resumed its military campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Only half of the launches have activated sirens and reached Israeli airspace, while the rest fell short.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have carried out dozens of drone and missile strikes targeting vessels in the Red Sea, claiming the actions are in support of Palestinians amid the war in Gaza. The US has responded with large-scale strikes aimed at weakening the group’s military and financial infrastructure.
