CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Thursday the Iowa Board of Education heard potential changes to the state’s standards for K-12 science classes.

They emphasized the importance of having students connect science with their day-to-day lives. One example given was using local soil or lake water to conduct experiments or research.

Presenters say they are trying to make a distinction between curriculum and standards.

The full document does mention evolutionary history when covering evidence of common ancestry and diversity.

“Our high-quality instruction materials weren’t up to par in 2015. They are finally getting there, we’re getting some good stuff now that’s finally coming out and so being sure that the state is aware of some of the things that are coming out as high quality structured materials, as well as how do they adapt those to their kids, how do you take that material and make it relevant and worthwhile for their classrooms.”

The core areas of science mentioned in today’s presentation were life, physical, earth and space, engineering, technology, and society.
