Bomb squad called in as area near Lidl in Glasgow cordoned off

A street in Glasgow has been cordoned off after a "possible item of ordnance" was discovered in a river. The bomb squad were called to Riverbank Street in the Pollokshaws area after the alarm was raised at around 4.35pm on Friday.
Emergency services were responding to reports of the item being found in the White Cart Water near the street. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team have been made aware to assess the item.
Pictures taken from the scene show the area cordoned off with a number of uniformed officers standing guard near the Lidl store on the street. A local at the scene told the Record: "The road at Lidl has been closed off with police tape.
"Officers are standing at the road and there is a police van parked at the other side of the tape. The Lidl shop is still open. The area that is cordoned off is near the flats on the street."
Officers say the cordon has been put in place "as a precaution". Emergency services remain in attendance.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a possible item of ordnance found in the White Cart Water near to Riverbank Street in Glasgow around 4.35pm on Friday, April 11.
“A cordon has been put in place as a precaution and Explosive Ordnance Disposal made aware to assess the item.”
The Ministry of Defence have been contacted by the Record for comment.
