Firefighters are battling a huge blaze at an industrial estate.

Emergency services are in attendance at the fire in West Byrehill Industrial Estate in Kilwinning.

Video footage has captured large plumes of smoke billowing over the Byrehill Road area of the town near a new housing development.

Loud banging sounds can also be heard, with some residents in nearby Stevenston describing the noise as "like bombs going off".

A SFRS spokesperson said: We are currently in attendance at a large fire within a recycling centre on Byrehill Place, Kilwinning. We have mobilised six fire appliances to the scene."

There are no reports of any injuries. However, police have confirmed that several properties nearby have been evacuated as a precaution.

A Police Scotland statement read: "A cordon is in place and roads in the area have been closed. Diversions are in place and the public are advised that they should avoid the area at this time.

"North Ayrshire Council has opened Cranberry Moss Community Centre, Cambusdoon Place, Kilwinning KA13 6SL as a rest centre to accommodate residents and others who are unable to access their properties."

The fire appears to have started in the same area of Kilwinning as a massive blaze last year.

Almost exactly one year ago, April 8, 2024, a multi-agency response was required following a fire impacting the Fenix battery recycling plant on Byrehill Place.

Emergency crews remained in place at the scene for close to four days before being stood down.
