Tehran has condemned the recent anti-Iran resolution passed by the United Nations Human Rights Council, noting that Western nations, particularly the UK and Germany, exploit the council to advance political agendas against Iran.
At the end of the UN Human Rights Council’s 58th annual session in Geneva on Thursday, the body passed a resolution, spearheaded by Western countries, against Iran with 24 votes in favor, 8 against, and 15 abstentions.
The resolution extended the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran and decided that the Fact-Finding Mission should continue with a mandate to "monitor and investigate allegations of recent and ongoing serious human rights violations in the Islamic Republic."
In a statement on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemned sponsors of the resolution, including Germany, Britain, and Canada, for "misusing the human rights mechanism as a means to exert political pressure on developing countries."
He added that the "instrumental use" of the Human Rights Council by some Western countries, especially Britain and Germany, to impose their own political stances on Iran would "undermine the credibility" of the council and disrupt the processes of human rights cooperation and synergy among countries.
He dismissed the resolution as "legally void" due to the "ill will" of its drafters, its "factually incorrect" content and "reliance on unsubstantiated claims by anonymous sources."
Baghaei noted that supporters of the anti-Iran resolution have been supporting human rights catastrophe in the West Asia region, particularly Israel’s genocide in Gaza and the regime’s crimes against the people of Lebanon and Syria, over the past two years.
The Iranian spokesperson emphasized that London and Berlin "lack the moral standing" to lecture others on human rights given their political, financial and arms support for the Tel Aviv regime as it continues the genocidal war against the people of Palestine in the Gaza Strip.
If the United Kingdom, Germany, and other Western sponsors of the anti-Iran resolution are sincere in their concern over human rights situation in Iran, they should "cease their adherence to the United States in imposing illegal and inhumane sanctions against the Iranian people, which collectively constitute crimes against humanity," said the spokesman.
He affirmed Iran’s principled stance on safeguarding human rights and the fundamental freedoms of the nation in accordance with the Constitution and international documents and treaties.
Iran would “spare no effort to protect and promote human rights and also to detect and remove the cases of human rights violation”, Baghaei pointed out.
He reiterated that Iran would continue its interaction with the human rights mechanism, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in order to play an active role in promoting the human rights norms at an international level.
Earlier on Friday, Iran’s Ambassador to the UN headquarters in Geneva, Ali Bahraini, said the discriminatory act in passing the anti-Iran resolution undermines the credibility of the 47-member body.
He urged the council to focus on the catastrophic situation of human rights in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.
