Storm shelters available across West Tennessee

JACKSON, Tenn. — As we prepare for weather events that are coming soon, we want to give you updates regarding different safe areas around West Tennessee.
We were able to contact many cities and counties in our coverage area to learn about where you can go in your community to stay safe.
Carroll County
- Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in Huntingdon
- Bethel University Library in McKenzie
- McLemoresville Baptist Church
- McLemoresville Methodist Church
- Cornerstone Church in Atwood
- Atwood First Baptist Church
- McKenzie Church of Christ
Chester County
- Henderson City Hall
- Public Safety Building (across the street from Henderson City Hall)
Crockett County
- Shelter available on Park Street in Alamo
Decatur County
- Calvary Baptist (will open at 5 p.m.)
- Decatur County Courthouse (will be open as a storm shelter starting at 5 p.m. Enter from the North side (Library entrance)—signs will be posted. Pets are welcome, but they must be leashed or kenneled. What to Bring: Any personal items you need for comfort, but please be mindful of others, as space may be limited. A flashlight is recommended in case of power outages. No alcohol or illegal drugs—the courthouse is monitored, and everyone is expected to be respectful. Safety Reminder: Use extreme caution when traveling to and from the courthouse. Please check on elderly neighbors and those who may need assistance.)
Gibson County
- Gibson County Sheriff’s Office and the police department in Trenton have places available
- Dyer Elementary (No pets)
- Bradford Elementary (No pets)
- Rutherford Elementary (No pets)
- Kenton Elementary (No pets) (Will open when warning is issued)
- Medina Elementary School
- Humboldt Police Department – in the basement entrance towards daycare (No Pets)
- Medina High School (Check their Facebook Page) (As of right now at 14:05 – they will not be open)
- Yorkville School on Nebo Yorkville Rd
- Springhill School
- First Methodist Church – Dyer – opens at 5:00
- Trenton- does not have a storm shelter but the sheriff’s office lobby will be open and everyone is asked to stay away from the windows. Or tea pot room at Trenton PD (No pets)
- The FEMA building in Milan (behind the theater 1101 Williamson St (No pets) opens at 6pm)
- Special School District Schools will also be available
Hardeman County
- First Baptist Church on Main Street in Whiteville will open as a storm shelter (beginning at 4 p.m.)
Hardin County
- Saltillo Community Center
- You can also watch Hardin County’s EMA page to see if they will be opening the county courthouse
Haywood County
- Haywood County Criminal Justice Complex
- Haywood Middle and Elementary Schools (will open at 4 p.m.)
Henderson County
- The Watson Center (will open at 4 p.m.)
- Main fire building
Henry County
- Harrelson, Henry and Lakewood Schools (will open at 5 p.m. and remain open until the threat of severe weather has passed)
- Inman Middle School (will open at 5 p.m. and remain open until the threat of severe weather has passed)
- Rhea Elementary School (will open at 5 p.m. and remain open until the threat of severe weather has passed)
Madison County
- Jackson Regional Airport
- The Carl Perkins Civic Center (will open at 6 p.m., please use the lower-level south entrance across from Mother Liberty C.M.E. Church to enter)
McNairy County
- Finger Fire Department
- Milledgeville Fire Department
- Selmer Elementary School
- McNairy County Courthouse
Weakley County
- Courthouse in Dresden (will open at 5 p.m.)
- Martin Gateway Center (will be available when a watch or warning is issued)
- Sharon Presbyterian Church basement at 4 p.m. (You can not bring any animals to the shelter. All kids need to be accompany with an adult.)
