Ukrainian soldiers took out a squadron of Russian tanks in a tense battle that ended with a shootout inside a trench along the frontlines.

Harrowing video shows the moment members of Ukraine’s 43rd Mechanized Brigade came face-to-face with five armored Russian vehicles trying to storm the frontlines in the Kharkiv region, local Militarnyi reported.

The tanks, however, came under immediate heavy fire from the Ukrainian troops, with explosive drones managing to sneak by the fighting and detonating as they made contact with each of the vehicles.

The drones were able to take out a pair of Russian BTR-80 and a T-B0B tanks, along with two infantry fighting vehicles and an armored truck, according to the Ukrainian outlet.

Some Russian infantrymen survived the blasts and managed to make their way into the nearby trenches, with a lone Ukrainian soldier rushing in to take them out.

Video of the encounter with the final Russian soldier shows the two fighters struggling to locate each other inside the winding walls of the trench.

The Kyiv soldier then grabs a helmet and flings it at the Russian soldier, who appears to mistake it for a grenade, causing him to dash out of his hiding spot where he is shot and killed by the Ukrainian fighter.

The Kharkiv and Donetsk regions continue to see some of the most intense fighting of the war, with Ukraine able to keep Russia’s forces from advancing as of Monday night, according to the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank analyzing the combat.

Pavlo Shamshyn, a spokesman for Ukraine’s Kharkiv Group of Forces, said the Russians have remained on the defensive along the border, but officials warned that Moscow soldiers could mount a large assault soon.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the military leaders in the region over the weekend to tout their latest success fending off the Russian invaders as he called on the troops to remain vigilant.

“I want to thank you for truly bringing Ukraine closer to a lasting and just peace, to victory. We all deeply want this, and every step is important,” told the soldiers in Kharkiv.

Zelensky recently agreed to a maritime truce with Russia in the Black Sea as part of a US-mediate deal that officials hope can serve as a gateway to a wider cease-fire agreement to end the war, which is currently in its third year.
