Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) warned House Democrats that their jokes about the renamed "Gulf of America" could lead to additional name changes, such as renaming Washington, D.C., the "District of America."

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America and restoring Denali’s name to Mount McKinley in Alaska.

During a House subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries hearing on Tuesday, Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene's (R-GA) "Gulf of America Act of 2025" was one of the bills under consideration. The legislation would codify Trump's order renaming the body of water.

After some Democrats mocked the name change during the hearing, Boebert quipped that the District of Columbia could be next to receive a name change if the jokes about the Gulf of America continue.

"I would caution my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to refrain from making fun of the Gulf of America because next up may be the District of America that we're working on. So just keep the jokes at bay, and maybe we'll just stick with the Gulf of America for now," Boebert said.

The District of Columbia was named in 1791, along with Washington, the city chosen as the nation's capital. Washington was named after the first U.S. president, George Washington, while "Columbia" refers to explorer Christopher Columbus, who is credited with discovering the Americas in 1492.

MAPQUEST TROLLS TRUMP WITH ‘NAME YOUR OWN GULF’ WEBSITE

The Gulf of America name change has been limited in its acceptance. Government agencies and some map services complied with the order domestically, while some news bureaus, such as the Associated Press, kept the name Gulf of Mexico in copy.

Trump heralded the name change as a key action early in his second term, displaying a map featuring the Gulf of America in the Oval Office and declaring Feb. 9 Gulf of America Day.
