Two arrested on drug and gun charges following Martin County car chase

MARTIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Two men have been arrested on drug and gun charges after taking law enforcement on a short chase yesterday.

Deputies with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office tried to stop a car around 9:15 p.m. Monday on US 64 near Bell Town Road.

After a short chase, the car stopped. Deputies and Williamston police officers cleared the car and arrested 20-year-old Darantaye Whitfield and 24-year-old Jefton Bynum.

Law enforcement then searched the car and found crack cocaine, marijuana and a Glock 9mm handgun.

Whitfield was charged with the following:

  • Felony Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell or Deliver Cocaine
  • Felony Possession with Intent to Manufacture Sell or Deliver Marijuana
  • Felony Possession of Marijuana
  • Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon,
  • Misdemeanor Flee to Elude
  • Misdemeanor Failure to Stop for Blue Lights / Siren

Bynum was charged with Felony Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell or Deliver Cocaine, Felony Possession with Intent to Manufacture Sell or Deliver Marijuana, Felony Possession of Marijuana and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Whitfield was booked on a $100,000 bond, and Bynum is under a 48-hour hold.

Both men will be in court on Wednesday.
