Mike Gooding has announced that he is retiring from WVEC. His final broadcast will be April 1.
Gooding started working at the Norfolk, Virginia ABC affiliate in 1985 and, according to the station, has traveled all over the world covering military operations. He’s worked as an assignment editor, show producer, sports and news anchor, general assignment reporter, and photographer.
He’s visited 19 countries and was embedded with U.S. forces in three wars: Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
“I’d previously done some sports and some politics, and I didn’t always love the pro athletes or the politicians,” he said. “But the troops, they seemed like true heroes, who were worthy of the coverage I could give them.”
Gooding plans to spend more time listening to his favorite band: The Beatles.
