The American Legion Post 111 in Louisville is hosting a cemetery cleanup in an effort to honor local war veterans.

The event will be held at the Louisville Cemetery, 2105 Empire Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Volunteers must sign a waiver before working, but can do so between 9-9:50 a.m. at the cemetery.

Pam Mottorano, Post 111 event chair, said American Legion posts offer events and resources for veterans to help veterans. Although Louisville does a great job of maintaining the cemetery, she said, Saturday’s cleanup is a way to complete detailed work and ensure no grave is missed.

“As a community, (the event) is a good way to honor those who are resting in peace there and make sure they have grounds that are well cared for,” Mottorano said.

Mottorano hopes the event helps the community see the importance of honoring veterans’ legacy, history and lives.

Volunteers, who are asked to bring their own gardening supplies and gloves, will clean up trash and markers from headstones and will ensure no weeds or grass are covering names.

Mottorano said the event helps the community ensure the final resting grounds of veterans remain beautiful. Plus, volunteers can pay their respects while also getting to know Post 111’s veteran members.

The Post 111 will provide food, drinks and a bathroom for volunteers. More information is available at facebook.com/Post111Louisville.
