Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman John Fogerty called it a “jaw dropper” that Donald Trump would choose to play his band’s Fortunate Son hit at rallies in the past.

Fogerty sent a cease and desists to Trump in 2020 over the use of Fortunate Son and said he was aghast at the former president’s song choice in a new interview with Bill Maher for the Club Random podcast.

“You kind of go, that’s a jaw dropper, you know, isn’t it?” Fogerty said after recalling Trump playing the song. “Because had I been able to, I would have written the song about him, but of course I was 50 years ahead of that.”

Fortunate Son became a Vietnam War-era favorite for those opposing the war and draft. Fogerty served in the U.S. Army Reserve at the time and wrote the tune as a protest. The lyrics highlight class disparities and called out rich people born into money.

Maher asked Fogerty if he thought Trump understood the “irony” of playing the song.

“I wonder about that. That’s the best that I can say. I don’t know that he does or he doesn’t,” Fogerty said.

The musician argued Trump likely only relies on “instinct” and doesn’t put too much thought into music choices.

Maher agreed, saying Trump works off of “pure id.” The comedian argued Trump’s critics too often “overestimate” him.

“People are always overestimating him, really overestimating him. I understand he’s very successful in this quest he has to overturn the government, but there’s never any planning in it,” Maher said. “It’s just he fumbles forward constantly. He’s just — you know, you can’t take your eyes off of him because he’s insane. Insanity photograph.”
