PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A man is accused of attacking his estranged wife and taking off with his son, prompting a search in west Phoenix earlier this week.

On Wednesday around 11:45 p.m., officers were called to a home near 99th Avenue and Indian School Road after receiving reports that 27-year-old Emmanuel Maldonado assaulted a woman. As police arrived, they learned Maldonado had fled the area with his child.

Authorities say throughout the investigation, police learned that Maldonado was estranged from his wife and children after she came to Arizona from out of state. That night, Maldonado reportedly attacked his wife at her new house and took her phone, gun and car keys. She then barricaded herself inside a room with several kids. After the attack, Maldonado drove off with a child in his wife’s car.

The boy was listed as a Missing Endangered Child as police worked to find him and Maldonado. On Thursday, Maldonado was found in the same area where the assault happened. He was taken into custody, and the boy was safely reunited with his mother.

Maldonado was booked on multiple charges, including aggravated assault, weapons violations and burglary. Authorities say kidnapping charges haven’t been filed because of custody concerns, but it is currently under investigation.
