They came, they roared and they conquered the sky over Gloucestershire once again. Two USAF B-1B Lancers took off from RAF Fairford this lunchtime (June 1) on another mission.

Their time at their Cotswolds base has proved eventful with a close encounter with a Russian jet over the Baltic Sea on their way over to England from the United States. And they were involved in dropping live bombs during a training exercise in Latvia.

The planes - SPICY41 and SPICY42 - have also conducted a flypast over Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The United States Air Force is likely to release details of today's flights once they have returned to base.

The incredible noise of the two bombers taking off today was remarked upon by aviation enthusiasts who have been patiently waiting for the aircraft to take off and were delighted to see SPICY41 and SPICY42 roar into the air. The planes are known for the distinctive sound their engines make.

Rob Wade tweeted a video with the explosive noise clear to hear, he described it as the "bone-shaking sound of Spicy41 taking off". Simon Edwards said it was 'ground shaking'.

The B1-B Lancer is described by the USAF as "Carrying the largest conventional payload of both guided and unguided weapons in the Air Force inventory, the multi-mission B-1 is the backbone of America's long-range bomber force. It can rapidly deliver massive quantities of precision and non-precision weapons against any adversary, anywhere in the world, at any time."

It adds: "The B-1 is a highly versatile, multi-mission weapon system. The B-1B's synthetic aperture radar is capable of tracking, targeting and engaging moving vehicles as well as self-targeting and terrain-following modes."

There has been a lot of plane activity above our county in recent days. Eurofighters roared across the county last Tuesday (May 23) before two USAF B-1B bombers landed at RAF Fairford (after a close encounter with a Russian jet), followed by another pair last Thursday.

F35 fighter jets have also been seen over the county. Some people have expressed concern about the frequency and lack of notice about such flights and 'war games'.
