Former county commissioner Harold Bacon dies

Former Bryan County Commissioner Harold Bacon died Friday after a long illness.

Bacon, who served on the county commission from 1985 to 1992, and helped expand the library and courthouse in Pembroke, as well as playing a key role in organizing the North Bryan County Fire Department. He was 86, according to his obituary.

 Born in the Bacontown area on what is now Fort Stewart, Bacon was as an Air Force veteran during the Korean war and came home to become a successful businessman while also serving on the Pembroke Downtown Development Authority..

He was also a man of deep faith, helping to found the Pembroke Ministerial Association while helping hundreds of needy people in the community.

Visitation is Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Flanders Powell Funeral Home. His funeral service is set for Monday at 2 p.m. at Northside Cemetery.

Social distancing and face masks are required due to COVID-19.
