LAURINBURG — American Legion softball could soon be coming to Scotland County.

An interest meeting for athletes who would like to play in a local North Carolina American Legion Lady Fastpitch team will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. inside Scotland High’s media center.

The league began in 2017 with 11 teams. It ballooned to 26 team in 2018, and officials expect that total to grow to around 60 teams this year. The season begins in June.

Scotland’s team will include players who are currently in high school or are preparing to enter high school in the fall. Athletes who turn 20 before August 2 are not eligible to participate.

Games will be played on weeknights throughout June and July. No games will be played on weekends, so athletes who play travel ball can still keep those commitments.

The Lady Legion season will conclude with a state championship tournament in Shelby from Aug. 12 to 14.

The Legion Lady Fastpitch league is sanctioned by the American Legion Department of North Carolina.
