A crisp November morning greeted members of the Park Ridge’s American Legion Post as they paid tribute to military veterans with a short ceremony Sunday.

The annual Veterans Day observance featured prayer, a performance of taps and the presentation of a memorial wreath in front of the Mel Tierney American Legion Post 247 monument at Hodges Park. The monument includes the names of Park Ridge men who died serving the country in wars dating back to World War I.

Leading the ceremony was Post 247 Cmdr. Robert Mau, a United States Air Force veteran and former Park Ridge alderman in the late 1970s.

This year’s observance recognized the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

“A lot of our grandfathers were involved in World War I,” Mau said of the American Legion membership. “And [their families] continued to get involved: World War II, Korea. We’ve got all the wars covered with our veterans.”

Post 247 meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Des Plaines Elks Club, 495 Lee St. in Des Plaines.

Maine South High School musicians also marked Veterans Day with “Tribute to Veterans: A Patriotic Band Concert” on Sunday. The concert featured special guest conductor Master Sgt. Jack Kinsella, the Park Ridge Police Department Honor Guard, and opening remarks by Park Ridge Mayor Marty Maloney.

“You are valued, and your service will not be forgotten,” Maloney told veterans who were gathered for the show.

The full concert can be viewed on Maine South’s WMTH YouTube channel.
