John Bridges United No. 15, American Legion Auxiliary of Detroit Lakes, once again sponsored a delegate to Minnesota girls State that was held June 10-16.

Lily Burnside, daughter of Jennifer and Brady Burnside of Detroit Lakes, was the chosen delegate. She will be a senior at Detroit Lakes High School this year.

Delegates to the program are sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary units throughout Minnesota. Girls State was held on the campus of Bethel University in St. Paul. Corrine Frank is the Girls State Chairman for Unit 15.

Girls State is a week-long course in government for girls who have completed their junior year in high school. During the week, the girls heard from speakers from Minnesota government, learned how different levels of government work and set up their own governments.

To get hands-on experience in campaigning and voting, the girls are divided into cities and counties that make up Girls State. The girls choose an office, at any level, which they would like to run for, campaign for the office and elections follow.

During the remainder of the week, the elected officials are in charge of the Girls State government. Lily was elected as one of three Supreme Court Associate Justices.

Tours and visits by various state officials are also part of the week-long program. The John Bridges American Legion Auxiliary has had delegates at Girls State every year from 1952 to present, expect in 1995, 2000, 2006 and 2017 when there were no delegates.
