American Legion Auxiliary Girls State returns to Eastern

Staff Report

The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State event will be returning to campus from June 17-23.

Girls State has been at Eastern for 34 years.

According to the American Legion Auxiliary website, Girls State is a unique government-in-action learning program that guides young women to become knowledgeable stewards of freedom, democracy and patriotism.

Also according to the website, students participate in mock democratic activities. Students join mock political parties (usually called the “Federalists” and the “Nationalists”), there they assume the roles as governmental leaders, and campaign with their parties.

On the webpage, the American Legion Auxiliary believes that educating these students on the American democratic ideals will help ensure the survival of American Democracy.
