The effort is called Operation: Remember Our Heroes and was conceived by former Cmdr. Peter T. Puzzo. It is activated twice a year,  Memorial Day weekend and Veterans Day weekend.

“We believe that is not too much to offer these brave men and women who fought, and in some cases died, for our freedom and the way of life we choose,” Puzzo said.

As of April 2016, all known veterans’ graves have military markers and fresh American flags in the Brookside and Winter Beach cemeteries.

“Once again, the number of people supporting this endeavor has grown. For many of the military veterans participating, it was their third or fourth appearance," said George Von Kantor, the squad historian. "This was a tremendous effort, and all were excited to participate. The youngest was 10 years old, and there are always plenty of seniors participating," Von Kantor said after Veterans Day,

Next on the radar will be Sebastian Cemetery, with over 250 military grave sites. The program is covered entirely through donations from public and corporate sponsors and is in need of funding for flags and military markers.
